about

Among Telemann’s 600 or so orchestral suites, the four included on this album are the ones with the word “burlesque” in the title (TWV 55:F10, G10, G12, and B8). Due to the lack of author’s manuscripts, the exact dates of the compositions are unknown, but they can be dated on stylistic grounds between 1715 and 1745.

The movement titles of the Burlesque de Quixotte and the Ouverture à la burlesque refer to literary models. The “Don Quixotte Suite” was probably inspired not only by Miguel de Cervantes’ novel but also by Francesco Conti’s opera. Telemann's Suite is a series of musical representations of the famous characters and scenes from the novel.

The Ouverture à la burlesque is not so programmatic: it features characters from the Italian commedia dell’arte in the company of a pair of minuets.

The Ouverture à la burlesque and Ouverture avec la suite burlesque consist of an overture and six consecutive, unrealistically short Airs. However, it can be assumed that these compositions were originally written as ballet music and were repeated if necessary. Both were recorded here for the first time (i.e., world premiere recordings).
